Massive meat-eating dinosaurs discovered

Researchers say animal had horny covering over its face

Paleontologists have discovered in Niger bones of two massive meat-eating dinosaurs that may have picked over the same prey, much as modern-day lions and hyenas do.

University of Chicago paleontologists Paul Sereno and Stephen Brusatte named one of the dinosaurs Kryptops palaios, or "old hidden face," because of a horny covering over its face, they wrote in the scientific journal Acta Palaeontologica Polonia.

Fossil sea monster big enough to ‘bite a car’

150 million year-old dinosaur-era pliosaur largest of its kind

The fossil of a 50-foot long "sea monster" found in Arctic Norway was the biggest of its kind known to science with dagger-like teeth in a mouth large enough to bite a small car, researchers said on Wednesday.

The 150 million year-old dinosaur-era pliosaur, a fierce marine reptile, was about 16 feet 5 inches longer than the previous pliosaur record holder found in Australia.

Pint-sized primates were first in North America

Leaping, furry mini-monkeys crossed Bering land bridge long before humans

Leaping, furry mini-monkeys that were as small as mice crossed the Bering land bridge long before humans, representing North America's oldest known primates.

This new claim is based on the fossils of at least three individuals of this previously unknown species of extinct primate uncovered at a site near Meridian, Miss., scientists announced today. The researcher estimates the primate fossils date to about 55.8 million years ago.

10 million-year-old fossil found in New Mexico

Plant-eating oreodont resembled a cross between a pig and a camel

A geologic mapping project led to the finding of a 10 million-year-old fossil that's now being studied at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science.

Dave Love, a geologist with the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources, spotted a jaw and teeth 8 feet up from the canyon floor Feb. 22 east of the visitors' center at Bosque del Apache National Wildlife Refuge near Socorro. A team dug out the fossil from the steep cliff face last week.

Scientists find bizarre lungless frog

Enigmatic amphibian apparently gets oxygen through its skin

The first lungless frog has been discovered lurking in the jungles of Borneo.

‘Little hermit’ is both new species and new genus

A scientist with the Missouri Botanical Garden has rediscovered and identified a rare parasitic plant that hasn't been seen by botanists in more than 20 years.

A single specimen of the plant was found in Mexico in 1985, but the plant wasn't seen again until St. Louis botanist George Yatskievych and a colleague found it in a pine oak forest in Mexico's mountains.
