Investigating the neural basis of anxiety

People suffering from anxiety have the tendency to interpret ambiguous situations that could be potentially dangerous but not necessarily so, as threatening. Scientists have uncovered the neural basis for such anxiety behaviour in mice. The researchers claim that a receptor for the neurotransmitter serotonin and a neural circuit involving an area of the brain called the hippocampus, play an important role in mediating fear responses.
