Two New Species Of Soft Coral Discovered In Caribbean


Two new species of soft corals were discovered during an October expedition to Saba Bank, Netherlands Antilles, the largest atoll in the Caribbean. Herman Wirshing, a graduate student from the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science's Biology and Fisheries Division, joined leading coral reef experts from Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi (TAM-CC), and the Universidad de los Andes in Columbia, to help identify and quantify soft coral and crustacean species on the Bank.

Zes soorten giraffen in Afrika, blijkt uit DNA


Rotterdam, 30 dec. Er bestaan zes verschillende soorten giraffen (nu nog gezamenlijk bekend als Giraffa camelopardalis).


Dat concluderen biologen uit een analyse van het erfelijk materiaal van 266 dieren dat zij verzamelden door in het wild pijltjes op ze af te schieten (BMC Biology, 21 december 2007).

New monkey species is already endangered


If this monkey looks bewildered, it could be because of the excitement it has generated among biologists. A uacari monkey living in north-western Amazonia, it belongs to a species unknown to science until recently but is now named Cacajao ayresii in honour of Brazilian biologist Marcio Ayres, who pioneered field studies on uacaris.

Nearly a half a billion years ago, tiny horseshoe crabs crept along the shorelines much like today's larger versions do, new fossil evidence suggests.

a large shoot, a bit like an asparagus, grows out of the top of the tree and starts to spread. You get something that looks a bit like a Christmas tree growing out of the top of the palm," he said.


The branches of this shoot then become covered in hundreds of tiny white flowers that ooze with nectar, attracting insects and birds.


But the effort of flowering and fruiting depletes the tree so much that within a few months it collapses and dies,
