Het Institute for the Study of War (ISW) is zoiets als de Amerkaanse tegenhanger van het Nederlandse Instituut Clingendael
Op hun website stellen ze onder andere elke dag een analyse beschikbaar van de laatste ontwikkelingen in de oorlog in Oekraïne. In de op moment van schrijven meest recente update schrijven ze onder andere:

The head of one of the largest suppliers of surveillance equipment to Russian special services died on July 22. Russian law enforcement found “IKS Holding” Head Anton Cherepennikov dead in his office on July 22 and later claimed that Cherepennikov suffocated during a xenon gas therapy session.[32] IKS Holding owns the developer of the YADRO data storage system, which Russian authorities reportedly use in efforts to monitor Russian internet users, and the Citadel Group, which produces operational-search measures that Russian special services use to listen to phone calls and monitor internet activities.[33]

Na wat googelen kwam ik erachter dat radioactief Xenon gebruikt kan worden voor medische doeleinden. Er bestaat echter ook iets als "Xenon inhalation therapy".
Een website claimt dat Xenon geweldig werkt tegen depressie. Ze schrijven daar:

Xenon gas is inhaled and it reaches your brain within minutes, showing rapid results. It acts by manipulating chemical balance in your brain and boosting its health. Your brain has receptors that make thing happen in your brain by sending different messages and xenon has a friendly relationship with this receptor. It binds with them and causes productive changes, creating an adaptive environment in your body.

Xenon therapy, particularly effective on your brain, is an amazing depression treatment. Depression messes up the chemical balance of your brain causing low self-esteem and mood swings. It also affects your physiological health causing weight loss and sleep disorders. Xenon therapy relieves depression by putting chemical balance back in the wellness limit. Its adaptogenic and nootropic properties soothe stress and relieve anxiety.

Maar xenon is een edelgas en dus (dacht ik) chemisch inert. Is Xenon inahlation therapy een serieuze medische behandeling of is het een kwakzalversverhaal?

En als er serieus xenon therapie gebruikt zou zijn bij de bovengenoemde man, zou dat dan in zijn kantoor gebeuren?

Je kunt xenon inhaleren vanuit een ballon, net als lachgas, en het genotsgevoel is blijkbaar sterker. Op deze youtubevideo van Hamilton Morris zie je hoe hij het inhaleert.

Hier staat iets meer over de werking van Xenon. Als ik het zo bekijk dan is de roes die je ervan krijgt gewoon veroorzaakt door zuurstofgebrek.

Health effects of xenon

Inhalation: This gas is inert and is classified as a simple asphyxiant. Inhalation in excessive concentrations can result in dizziness, nausea, vomiting, loss of consciousness, and death. Death may result from errors in judgment, confusion, or loss of consciousness which prevent self-rescue. At low oxygen concentrations, unconsciousness and death may occur in seconds without warning.

The effect of simple asphyxiant gases is proportional to the extent to which they diminish the amount (partial pressure) of oxygen in the air that is breathed. The oxygen may be diminished to 75% of it's normal percentage in air before appreciable symptoms develop. This in turn requires the presence of a simple asphyxiant in a concentration of 33% in the mixture of air and gas. When the simple asphyxiant reaches a concentration of 50%, marked symptoms can be produced. A concentration of 75% is fatal in a matter of minutes. Symptoms: The first symptoms produced by a simple asphyxiant are rapid respirations and air hunger. Mental alertness is diminished and muscular coordination is impaired. Later judgment becomes faulty and all sensations are depressed. Emotional instability often results and fatigue occurs rapidly. As the asphyxia progresses, there may be nausea and vomiting, prostration and loss of consciousness, and finally convulsions, deep coma and death.

This agent is not considered a carcinogen.

Je kan dus net zo goed pure stikstof inademen als pure Xenon. Klopt wel. Ik heb wel eens iemand met helium zien spelen en een Donald Duck stemmetje zien doen. Toen ze dat een paar keer gedaan had werd ze duizelig en dacht ze dat ze high werd. Ik heb haar toen uitgelegd dat ze waarschijnlijk alleen maar zuurstofgebrek had en dat ze er niet te lang mee door moest gaan. Gelukkig is ze er toen inderdaad mee gestopt. De werking van Xenon als party drug kan misschien wel soortgelijk zijn.

Dan moet ik denk ik zelf de conclusie maar trekken dat het een bogus behandeling is en waarschijnlijk meer schade doet dan goed.

Je kan ook stoned worden van teveel zuurstof in de hersenen, haal maar eens in tien keer door de neus,en uit door de mond, dit is veel ongevaarlijker dan zuurstof vervangen door een ander gas waardoor een zuurstoftekort in de hersenen ontstaat en je zo een high gevoel krijgt.
Maar ik moet en bij zeggen, je kan er door flauw vallen en voor mensen met hyperventilatie is het ook niet zo goed, maar het is dus geheel gratis en zonder gevaar.
