8.2.3 Deicer Additives
In the past, metals have been added to deicers to improve their performance. This practice has
been discontinued, however, because of harmful environmental effects (Gales and Vander
Meulen, 1992). Recently, an organic additive has been developed that appears to improve the
effectiveness of road salt. The additive, Ice Ban, is derived from the beer brewing process.
Although the product has not been widely used, evidence from Webster, New York, suggests
that it is a cost-effective additive. During the winter of 1995-96, the town saved $58,000 by
using this additive (Strable, 1996). Some concern has been raised about the potential BOD
loading of this product (Smith, 1997).

HRM Testing New Anti-Icing Product
(Monday, January 30, 2006)-- HRM ice/snow crews will be conducting trials with a liquid additive to road salt to test its effectiveness in winter operations.
Geomelt® is a all organic liquid anti-icing agricultural product . When mixed with salt brines, it lowers the freezing point of the brine.
We will be conducting trails over the next couple of weeks in all three (East, West and Central) regions, says Gordon Hayward, Coordinator, Ice/Snow Program. In the West Region, we will be mixing it directly into our brine tanks in our pre-wetting operations. In Central and East, we will be spraying it directly onto our stockpiles of salt and sand.
Mr. Hayward says residents may notice a brownish tinge to the road salt, and possibly a sweetish odour, in their area. Geomelt® is an all organic product , non-corrosive, friendly to the environment, and human contact.
Note: West Region is basically Halifax and Timberlea areas; Central Region is Bedford, Sackville and Fall River areas; and East Region is Dartmouth, Cole Harbor and Eastern Passage areas.)

Alternatives to salt, such as the various "M-50" products (liquids created from byproducts of agricultural, beer, and distilled alcohols processing, combined with magnesium chloride), have been tested. "Were always looking for something new," Townsend says. "Weve done testing evaluation on some M-50 products; we werent real happy with it. Were just now testing Ice Slicer. But salt is still the standard thing."
