Ja een autodidact was hij, met alleen lagere school en zeer geringe wiskundige kennis, zeker. Frank James heeft er jaren over gedaan het werk van Faraday te bundelen en vertelt in een interview:
Faraday had no formal mathematical training. Did this hold him back? Or, as Tyndal suggests, might it have ‘prevented him from driving his adits into places where no theory pointed to a lode’?
Oh yes it’s clearly the latter. I mean Tyndal’s absolutely spot on there. Had Faraday gone to Cambridge and done the mathematical Tripos there he would have been so inculcated into the Newtonian view of the world that never in a thousand years would he have made the discoveries that he made. Though, of course, he couldn’t go to a university because he was a dissenter.

Faraday had discovered electromagnetic rotations in 1821: a magnet coming up through a bowl of mercury with a wire hanging with an electric current through it rotated continuously around the magnet. Faraday believed that if Ampere’s theory was so good, it should have predicted this phenomenon. It didn’t. Therefore it anticipated nature: it closed off a whole range of experimental phenomena. That’s why Faraday was pretty anti-mathematical.
